Quote Analysis –

“In the darkness of my dark-beating heart, I know. He’d have loved it all right. You see ? Even death has a heart.”

Markus Zusak uses death to show the perspective of WW2 through the eyes of the ‘book thief’. From the quote above “of my dark-beating heart” we can see how death has human characteristics and could be mistaken for a average person walking on the street. The association with love / heart and death is conflicting but is being shown through out the book as the character of death is breaking down the myths of his own legacy. Constantly death shows us his points of empathy through the book

  1. I think I’d disagree with some of what you say – mainly because it’s in conflict with the quote you chose. If Death says he has a heart, isn’t this actually suggesting that he is like humans? The things we associate with the symbol of the heart are compassion and love, for example.

Why do you think Zusak has chosen to personify death in this novel? What idea does this help reinforce?
